Timeless design for real life.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Toronto, ON November 12, 2025 In Toronto’s west end, a newly built family home captures what happens when clarity, trust, and a shared vision guide every decision. Designed by Joan and Company Interiors for longtime clients Nathania and Mark, this Kingsway residence reflects both the confidence of experienced collaboration and the steady leadership of a studio known for design that balances beauty and practicality.

“Nathania reached out before they even bought the lot,” says Joan MacAlpine, founder and principal designer of Joan and Company Interiors. “She and her husband wanted more space for their family and asked me to view a few properties with them, both new builds and tear-downs, to help decide what would make the most sense. That early involvement shaped the entire process. Design was never an afterthought.”

With the lot secured, Joan and Company Interiors led the design from concept through completion, working with TPM Custom Homes and For Walls a Roof to realize a vision for family life that feels relaxed, refined, and enduring.
A Vision Grounded in Real Life
The brief was to design a home that feels timeless and grounded, with the warmth and durability to support family life. For Joan and Company Interiors, that meant balancing craftsmanship and comfort, designing spaces that can withstand the rhythm of children, pets, and everyday movement without losing elegance.
“They wanted a home that feels effortless and inviting,” says Joan. “The kind of calm and layered warmth that encourages people to gather and stay.”
Natural light informed the layout. A south-facing backyard guided the placement of the kitchen and great room, while character-grade oak floors, natural limestone mantle, tumbled marble tile, and linen drapery introduced warmth and tactile richness. Traditional elements such as trim, mouldings, and a classic staircase balanced contemporary furniture and millwork to create a home that feels both established and current.
Design, Detail, and Determination
Design leadership often shows up in the smallest moments. One of this home’s most distinctive details, the brass thresholds in the front hall, nearly didn’t make it into the final design.

“Our brass was thinner than the flooring and could not sit directly on the concrete leveler as we had originally planned,” says Joan. “Many would have removed it, but my team worked with our woodworker to engineer a custom hardwood base that could allow everything to be supported properly. It was built, plated, and installed within forty-eight hours. That level of precision is what defines our work. Designing a custom home requires a lot of problem solving and consistently shaping and reworking ideas that ultimately feel fresh, functional, and right.”
Throughout the home, that same attention to detail carries through. Oak-trimmed arches define key sightlines, while a limestone fireplace anchors the great room. Every finish is intentional and built to last.
A Space of Her Own
Among the home’s most personal spaces is the snug, a quiet front room conceived for reading, reflection, and study. Positioned at the front of the house, it acts as a counterpoint to the openness of the main floor, grounding the home with a sense of calm and intention. It embodies the project’s balance between structure and soul.
“Our client is a lifelong learner and entrepreneur,” says Joan. “We wanted the snug to reflect that spirit, warm, grounded, and purposeful. It’s where calm meets curiosity and where focus feels effortless.”
A Collaboration Built on Trust
This Kingsway project marks the fifth time Joan and Company Interiors has worked with the Harrison family previously designing their family cottage, former home, an office space as well as Nathania’s movement studio in Toronto’s west end - SAOR Studio. Over years of collaboration, mutual trust has evolved into a shared rhythm of decision-making.
“There’s confidence that comes with experience,” says Joan. “Our client trusts our process, and we understand how they want to live. That trust gives us room to lead creatively and push design decisions that make a difference.”
Their shared understanding of leadership made the process fluid and focused. Each brought clarity to her role, allowing creativity and trust to guide the project from start to finish. The result is a home shaped by collaboration, guided by confidence, and designed with intention.
For Joan and Company Interiors, collaboration is more than a process; it is the foundation of great design. The Kingsway home embodies the studio’s ability to unite craftsmanship with intuition, creating spaces that are calm, cohesive, and enduring. It stands as a clear reflection of the studio’s vision and the quiet confidence that defines its work.
“It isn’t a showpiece,” Joan reflects. “It’s a family home that works hard, looks effortless, and will only get better with time.”
