IN8 Design delivers a state-of-the-art commuter wellness amenity that prioritizes comfort, care, and personal dignity in the daily journey.
*** UPDATE: Both Projects Win 🏆 ***
IN8 Design is honoured to have The Interchange recognized with an ARIDO Award in the Distinct category, celebrating innovation in interior environments. The award affirms the project’s ambition to transform underused concourse and underground parking space within Toronto’s iconic TD Centre into a commuter wellness facility that sets a new benchmark for workplace amenities. By elevating the everyday rituals of arrival, change, and renewal, the project demonstrates how design can advance health, inclusivity, and community at the heart of the city.
The team is equally thrilled that The Interchange Mural has received the ARIDO Award for Craft, acknowledging its exceptional detail, custom fabrication, and the meaningful expression it contributes to the public realm of Toronto-Dominion Centre.

Michel Arcand, Principal Designer, IN8 Design
“The Interchange was always about more than utility. It was about creating a human-centred journey where wellness is part of the daily rhythm of work. To see that vision recognized by ARIDO — across both interior innovation and craft — is profoundly meaningful.”
Don Parker, Principal, IN8 Design “The mural demanded a white-glove approach from concept through fabrication. Every alignment, every detail was intentional. Its recognition in the Craft category reflects the artistry and collaboration that elevate design into meaning. To receive awards for both projects underscores how design can connect workplace, amenity, and public realm into one holistic experience.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE– September 18, 2025, Toronto, ON The Interchange redefines the commuter experience within Toronto’s Toronto-Dominion Centre. Designed by IN8 Design for Cadillac Fairview, the project transforms an underused concourse and reconfigures a segment of the underground parking into a secure, amenity-rich facility that places wellness and safety at the heart of the commuter journey. Direct secure access from the street and underground parking was a priority for tenant commuters.
To address the complex parameters of arrival, IN8 took the uncommon step of engaging an Active Transportation Engineering consultant, whose recommendations reshaped curbs, traffic direction, and signage within the garage. The result is a seamless approach that establishes safety and clarity well before tenants enter the facility.

“We approached The Interchange as a serious transformation project where various combined engineering disciplines, unique consulting services, and design solutions have a great impact on how people feel moving through the space.”

The design traces a commuter’s metamorphosis from street entry to a refreshed, work-ready exit into Toronto’s underground PATH system. Changerooms and showers were conceived as hospitality environments rather than utilitarian zones. Careful placement of natural stones and Santos Rosewood veneer add warmth and durability while extending the vocabulary of the modernist complex above. Mirrored in scale and amenity, for men and women, and supplemented by a gender neutral area, these spaces embed equity as a baseline. Accessibility is further reinforced with adaptive bike racks and a generous universal washroom with an integrated shower and change table.
Human-centric features enrich this ethos of care. Towel service, filtered water, ironing and steaming stations, and conversation privacy hoods anticipate daily rituals. Full-length lockers, a repair station, and benches reflect the practical realities of urban commuting while creating places for pause. Every element was designed to meet functional needs without compromising composure, proving that even transitional moments can be thoughtfully designed.
Environmental graphics unify the experience. Custom wallcoverings, intuitive wayfinding, and carefully considered locker numbering were designed as part of a cohesive program that connects legibility and identity to movement through the facility with clarity and rhythm.
A dedicated HVAC compartment unit was integrated into the former parking structure, a significant feat given the limited space and the number of parking spaces required by code for the building.
A concourse mural marks the facility’s presence in the PATH. Conceived with Strange Colour and fabricated by Eventscape the installation spans 45 feet of rosewood panels and integrates 2,792 solid brass standoffs, each brushed and angled to reflect light. Arranged in a fluid, wave-like geometry, the composition evokes movement and crossing, echoing the patterns of bicycle treads. The mural signals arrival at The Interchange while enriching the concourse with a crafted, highly visual landmark. Though not formally designated as public art, it was delivered with the same white-glove attention as a commissioned piece, underscoring the design team’s commitment to craft. Its material integrity ensures the wall could never be diminished by commercial posters or utilitarian finishes.

“The Interchange shows how even the most practical programs can be designed thoughtfully. When wellness and equity guide the design, a utilitarian facility becomes an important personal space.”
~ Michel Arcand, Principal at IN8 Design Inc.
At concourse level, strategic lighting was coordinated with the existing ceiling system to highlight the mural. A wall-washing strip was introduced, calibrated to capture the brushed brass surfaces and amplify their sense of movement.
By uniting technical precision with material integrity, the project reinforces Cadillac Fairview’s commitment to sustainable, design-driven environments. The Interchange and its mural demonstrate how clarity, order, and equity can be embedded in heritage modernist settings, transforming commuting into an experience of wellness and care.
