An Interior Defined

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Kingston, ON, June 3, 2025 For Kingston-based interior and architectural design studio Stone & Associates, this newly completed penthouse in Toronto’s Avenue Road corridor is more than just a luxury home. It is the fifth residence entrusted to them by the same client and a testament to nearly forty years of trust, creative freedom, and shared design evolution.

What began as a single penthouse purchase before the pandemic transformed mid-construction when the client was offered the opportunity to combine two top-floor units. The resulting home spans half the building’s upper level, with direct elevator access, fully customized finishes, and a floor plan tailored around light, flow, and adaptability.

“Our work together has never been about repetition,” says principal interior designer

Katherine Stone. “Each home has reflected where the client was in their life, what they needed functionally, and what they were open to creatively. That kind of trust is special, and I never take it for granted.”

As with every project in their long-standing collaboration, this penthouse was shaped as much by intuition and emotion as by precision. With full creative license, Stone approached the design not as a series of rooms, but as an unfolding experience marked by rhythm, contrast, and a carefully orchestrated sense of arrival.

A central corridor serves as a connective spine. Instead of minimizing its scale, Stone transformed it into an architectural feature that guides movement and defines the home’s sequence. Herringbone floors run horizontally to break the visual line, while the corridor itself widens and contracts through various zones. A wraparound wood feature wall, sculptural doors, and custom lighting create a clear but elegant threshold between public and private space.

“I like an interior to unfold with moments of drama followed by calm,” Stone says. “That

corridor isn’t just a hallway. It’s a design instrument. It slows you down, then releases you.”

In the open-plan living and dining area, spatial clarity was achieved through carefully proportioned volumes and material continuity. A custom credenza, fabricated in the same wood as the corridor’s feature wall, establishes a strong lateral rhythm across the shared zones. The kitchen introduces contrast through low-sheen tan cabinetry, which balances the depth of adjacent dark finishes without disrupting flow. Across the dining and lounge areas, a black-glass table and scaled furnishings maintain horizontal emphasis, anchoring the plan without overstatement.

Elsewhere in the home, colour is used not as decoration but as a structural element defining transitions, framing volume, and calibrating contrast. In the foyer, dark silk walls and a coffered ceiling frame a bronze chandelier, grounded by a patterned floor that sets the architectural tone with restraint and weight.

The living spaces are organized through layers of black, moss green, and French blue. Tan cabinetry appears again in the ensuite, while black finishes define the fireplace surround, dining table, and the master suite’s vertical planes. A circular ombré rug dissolves from black to tan, echoing the gradient between furnishing and architecture.

“These colours weren’t trending in 2016,” Stone notes. “We chose them because they had presence, depth, and longevity. The goal wasn’t to be current; it was to be enduring.”

The master suite advances the project’s balance of form and restraint. Deeply textured black walls frame a custom-designed bed upholstered in blue velvet and linen, scaled to complement the room’s proportions without dominating them. Lighting and material transitions were controlled to create visual relief and a sense of spatial progression from the more active areas of the home. In the ensuite, a reduced palette of tan and white offers contrast through simplicity, maintaining cohesion via subtle shifts in tone, texture, and reflectivity.

Adaptability is integrated throughout the design. Swivel chairs shift between the view and conversation zones. In the foyer, a kinetic sculptural storage piece houses concealed drawers and compartments, function embedded within form. Every element was designed for continuity, scale, and purpose. Nothing is incidental.

“Modern city living demands more of our interiors,” Stone says. “They need to adapt to how we live, without clutter, without compromise.”

This penthouse is not just an expression of luxury. It is a study in continuity, restraint, and the confidence that comes from decades of shared vision. Each room transitions with intention. Each material serves a purpose. And every decision reflects a studio unafraid to lead with intuition, clarity, and care.
